Beautifully restored martello tower. Interesting and well presented information and items of interest. Fantastic views from the top of the tower. Such a friendly and informative welcome from Charlotte and Julie who were on duty. Well worth a visit especially as it costs only PS1 for admission
My nan had a caravan 10 yards away from this tower from the late 60s until the late 70s. We used to spend our summer holidays there was great fond memories, back then the stairs were covered in some kind of black tar and the tower was much darker. Nowadays the caravans have been removed and the caravan spaces set further back especially after the renovations.
First time here, came across this tower by chance. Only PS1 for a adult to enter & there's a good view from the top. There was a art exhibition on by a local artist which was interesting & plenty of history of the tower exhibited on the ground floor walls.
Amazing, great to see the preservation of our history, well worth a look round, the lady at the desk has done a lot of poems in the upper floor. And a lot of information about its history.(just remember to read the "mind your head" signs and DUCK I passed a few towers along the coastal path, would be a nice walking tour with a guide between them all, about 6 miles from Clacton on Sea I passed another two between is a Toby carvery which is good for refreshing yourself
Definitely worth a visit if you are walking past. Free for under 14's and PS1 for adults. Two floors of history and rotating art works, and a decent view (albeit mostly of the van park city) from the roof top
Jaywick Martello Tower is one of a series of 29 towers built from Brightlingsea to Aldeburgh in 1809-1812 during the Napoleonic Wars to guard against the threat of invasion. Latterly, it was bought by the council and renovated to reopen in 2005 as an arts, heritage and community space. There is a nominal fee to enter. From it, there are panoramic views of the coast. It's a welcome addition to the local area.
