This 240-acre nature reserve in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, is a haven for wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts. The reserve features a variety of habitats, including woodland, grassland, and wetlands, which provide a home for a diverse range of flora and fauna. Visitors can explore the reserve's network of footpaths and trails, including the popular 1.5-mile Wildlife Walk, which offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The reserve is also a popular spot for birdwatching, with over 100 species of birds recorded, including kingfishers, otters, and birds of prey. In addition to its natural beauty, the reserve also features a number of historic and archaeological sites, including ancient earthworks and a medieval fishpond.
The Keen of Hamar is a National Nature Reserve with special protection due to its unique geology and flora. It occupies about half the hill of the same name. Due to climate and the nature of the underlying serpentine rock it did not develop any soil over parts of it. It is so free-draining that in summer near-desert conditions prevail. As a result some of the plants that will grow are very rare indeed. Find them between late April and July. Patches of moorland-type grass alternate with bare stone to make for reasonably easy walking. Superb views in all directions. Beware of very dangerous sheer cliffs at the east end. They are fenced off but can be crossed. There is a car park and interpretation boards on the south side. Not accessible to disabled.
Feels like walking on an alien planet with rare and beautiful plants dotted around sporadically. Worth a wander around if in the area.
A veritable moonscape and home to one of the world's rarest plants, Edmonston's Chickweed. Only found here.
