This industrial heritage museum showcases the history of Sheffield's steel industry and its people. Located on a man-made island in the River Don, the museum is housed in a former steelworks building and features interactive exhibits, artifacts, and restored machinery. Visitors can explore the recreated workshops, warehouses, and offices, and learn about the lives of the people who worked in the industry. The museum also offers guided tours and special events throughout the year.
Lot's of information and exhibits focusing on Sheffield's steelmaking history. The river Don engine, the most powerful working steam engine in Europe, can be seen running twice a day Thursday to Sunday. Worth a visit if you're in the area!
Had a look around this fantastic museum, I think anyone who lives in Sheffield should pay a visit. There is a lot of history and machines that you can see and touch. Sometimes the scale of the things will blow your mind, the River Don Engine and the 10 Ton Grand Slam Bomb for starters. Entry is free but consider donating. Some nice Sheffield based items for sale in the shop.
Steel City has a monumental place in human history. City holds a significant place in industrial revolution, and in both world wars. It is also amazing to see how fast a civilization rise and fall in city scale.
An absolutely brilliant free museum, we brought our toddler and had a really good time. There's so much to see and we really enjoyed visiting, I loved all the extra stuff about WW1 that was really interesting. My only complaint was we turned up at 9:50 for parking and a man had shut the car park and didn't say anything to us just hard a guard across it, we parked elsewhere and walked to find car park open again.
One of the few places where you can go for free! A great informative museum related with steel industry equipment machines and even the antique cars bikes plane engine by Rolls Royce with some fun games to play > and video screen buttons to watch . A must recommended place to go and see if you are a museum lover or sight lover of any sort. Canteen available and even court's to play table tennis .
Great place to visit if you are interested in the history of Sheffield and more importantly the steel industry. It has the massive River Don Steam Engine (12,000HP). Unfortunately it was working at the time we visited. But lots of other interesting exhibits. Staff and volunteers are superbly helpful.
