Remote area known for the quality of its night skies, with a large man-made lake & an observatory.
Sadly a cloudy night as we wanted to see the stars at night ..!! This was the most expensive wild camping night of our Northern Adventure. Would I recommend this as a place to visit ... Of course but it's going to cost you .... Unlike Ripon in North Yorkshire...Great overnight with lots of History... don't miss the the Ripon Horn Blower ... On wards
Kielder forest was a nice place to visit. Not dog friendly at the bird display sanctuary, obviously. No cafe or shops open on a Monday either, so avoid or take drink and food with you. Drove the toll road "Kielder Road," which is 12 miles of rough gravel track, which was worth the PS5 for the views, although it was a cloudy, windy day when we visited.
Loved the location, the view & the friendliness of the team. Weather was pants, but it just made the view more beautiful
The castle has literally nothing of interest. The forest is so badly managed, what a shambles. You pay 5 pounds to park set off on one of the walks and 30minutes later are forced to turn back because they have closed the path. The coloured signs are useless and not helpful. The forest is a mess and dangerous. Was forced to do the Gruffalo trail as it was the only one open and we had had enough. Oh and you technically don't have to pay for parking as they can't issue penalty fines in any case it's just a money making exercise that they obviously aren't putting back into managing the vast estate.
Great walks and cycle paths, so quiet and some good places to eat and drink
Outstanding natural beauty. Peaceful. If you love walking / cycle tracks, this is thr place for you. Birds of Prey display was fabulous.
