Castle ruins of former Clan Campbell stronghold, with Loch Awe views from tower house battlements.
Can't go in but you can walk right close to it. Some great opportunities for photos. Small gift shop. Not busy at all. No tickets needed. Definitely stop in for a quick 25min visit.
The castle although closed affords scenic views of the loch and has an air of calmness around it. We sat along the shore and had a nice little sandwich break and a lay down. With loch on one side, the mountains on the other and the castle ruins behind us, it was overall an amazing sight! If you are lucky you might even spot the highland cows grazing in the fields. The place is dog friendly but please make sure the dogs and cows don't meet - they won't be friendly with each other :)
Any Scottish travel vid worth its salt will feature a stunning image of this castle from across the loch, beautiful and imposing in glorious ruin. Not quite. The car park is on the other side of the castle. A single, often muddy track (of course it was raining) makes a beeline through a marshy meadow, maybe 1/2 mile? It's flat, easy walking. We arrived at the castle only to find it barricaded behind metal fences. Taking pictures through a fence is not my best. You can walk all the way around it but waterproof shoes would have been very useful. The scenery around the castle was stunning, absolutely gorgeous, you can see why this castle was positioned on this spot. Some ubiquitous Highland coos who were too busy munching to pick up their heads for a pic helped to make the walk a bit more interesting as well as add their plea on the donations box.
The castle is closed but it is still a beauty to see. Alongside the loch and amidst the towering mountains, it's a peaceful spot to see. There is a large carpark, and then a small walk to get to the castle. All flat. No refreshment/souvenir shop open when we were there and the heilan coos were off in the distance unfortunately. There was room to walk all around the castle, and some nice spots for pictures all around. We really enjoyed seeing this castle on our OWN! No other visitors at the time we were there made it particularly meaningful.
Located at the end of Loch Awe, a beautiful location and an inspiring old castle ruin. When we visited the castle was closed but it was still a wonderful walk even though we got soaked by the rain.
Only had a walk around the castle and the surrounding. It is very easy walk from the car park. We were hoping to see the cows and got lucky. It's a nice place to walk around and particularly if you want to see cute Highland Cows.
