This 12th-century castle ruin sits atop a hill overlooking the village of Kilpeck, its stone walls and towers worn by time. The castle's architecture is a mix of medieval and Romanesque styles, with a large keep and curtain walls that enclose a central courtyard. The remains of a chapel and a great hall are still visible, giving visitors a glimpse into the lives of the nobles who once called Kilpeck Castle home.
Kilpeck Castle was established shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066, likely by the Norman family of de Normanville. As a motte-and-bailey structure, it featured a keep on a raised earthwork (the motte) and an enclosed courtyard (the bailey). This design was typical of Norman military architecture. The castle was part of a network of fortifications to secure Norman control over the Welsh Marches, a region on the border between England and Wales. By the 14th century, Kilpeck Castle had lost much of its military importance and gradually fell into decline. Youtube: Pinned on Places Instagram: @Pinnedonplaces
Very little remains of Kilpeck Castle which was built just after the Norman invasion in 1090 and stood upon an impressive motte and surrounded by extensive earthworks. It was originally a shell keep that overlooked a medieval settlement which has long gone and also the St Mary's and St David's church which was built at the same time and a real gem of a place to visit. A bit of a climb but possible for most people. Came for the castle but captivated by the view. Small parking area outside the church and the Kilpeck Inn is only a couple of minutes away for refreshments and food.
I was in the area, so took the opportunity to visit this motte and bailey. Free parking outside the church and a couple of information boards. Only two sections of wall survive. Nice views towards Hay Bluff. The Norman church is worth a look, though currently being renovated.
Your not exactly going to spend the whole day here !!! But right next door to Kilpeck Church (must see) castle in nice location with the Kilpeck pub 3 mins walk away.
