A small memorial dedicated to the American airmen who lost their lives during World War II, featuring a bronze plaque mounted on a stone plinth, surrounded by a well-manicured lawn and a few trees, with a simple yet poignant design that evokes a sense of respect and gratitude.
My father and I visited the memorial in 1995. My father, a young man from Texas "resided" in King's Cliffe as a member of the Army Airforce during WWII. We enjoyed our short time in King's Cliffe and I think my father enjoyed memories of his time stationed there. The memorial is a simple monument, but to those men and women who served there, it is a great tribute and appreciation for their sacrifice. I felt a lot of pride for my father that day.
A beautiful, well maintained memorial for the Kings Cliffe Airfield in WWll that was unveiled on 25th August 1983 with distinguished guests in attendance, including H.R.H The Duke of Gloucester. A striking memorial in that half a fighter plane from the USAAF has the badges of the 97th Service Group, 55th, 77th and 79th Fighter Squadrons. The other half looks like half an Raf Spitfire. The badges can be found here of 266 Rhodesian Airforce, 349 Belgium Airforce, 485 New Zealand Air force and 616 Raf Squadron. The site is situated away from the road, and is surrounded by beautiful countryside. One disappointment is that there is very limited provision for parking. There is only a small lay by for one car, so bear this in mind if you plan to visit this memorial. A fitting tribute to the part this airfield, its squadrons and its personnel played in WWll.
