Knowsley Council has one of the best contemporary art galleries in Merseyside and the North West of England. The first floor of The Kirkby Centre is home to the stunning Kirkby Gallery, which displays work by local, regional, national and international artists, touring exhibitions. A well as supporting emerging artists and community projects, it works with other arts agencies to deliver Liverpool City Region initiatives. Kirkby Gallery has excellent provision for schools, hosts regular art classes for adults and children, and seasonal family-friendly activities.
What a brilliant Gallery. A lovely welcome at Reception and in the Exhibition itself. Really friendly and informed team. Made our visit yesterday really something. The marvellous "Degas" and the other exhibits fascinating (great notes to help) - so glad, our first visit but hopefully not our last. Thank you for bringing this to Merseyside
Exhibition changes every 3 months or so, always interesting. There is a map on their site so found parking easy enough. Large gallery and staff very friendly. Can join a mailing list to be kept up to date about what is coming up.
The Council is really committed to making the most of this gallery. The layout changes every week. The current exhibition is by 4 artists from different parts of the UK, but all taught in Liverpool Art School.
My first visit today and would recommend a visit. I travelled by the excellent train link from Liverpool to Kirkby, (there are also northern trains from Wigan and Manchester) and it is a short cycle ride or walk to Kirkby Town centre. On the first floor of the easily located Council buildings on the edge of the town centre by the roundabout. A great venue with exhibits that are well worth travelling for. The pop art pictures were fascinating and loved the Ian Curtis picture! The only thing missing is a decent cafe and note there was one that seems to have closed, but hopefully that will change in future. Highly recommended and demonstrates that the city region has artistic riches beyond the usual (and brilliant) galleries in Liverpool City centre.
Difficult to access/find the Kirkby Centre by car but well worth persevering. The Willy Russell exhibition 'Another Aspect is excellent. He is as good an artist as he is a playwright. First time back in Kirkby after leaving 50 years ago and definitely worth it.
The gallery is a beautiful, white cube styled gallery and presents a broad exhibitions programme. The exhibitions are of the calibre you would expect to see in the big cities or London. One of the best cultural resources in the North West. The gallery also is supported by some of the loveliest volunteer invigilators, making the visit an all round experience.
