Preserved, medieval stone house filled with modern furniture, open sporadically for public tours.
Far exceeded my expectations. I hadn't known the house existed until it popped up on google and I thought about 20 mins would cover it. An hour and half later, having also visited the clink and Bishop's Tower, I said goodbye to the excellent guide and vowed to return.
Really disappointed as we drove all the way out and this English Heritage site was closed. It says online it's open on Sunday 10am till 4pm. We should have read the google reviews before heading out. The side street that it is located on is quite narrow, especially with cars parked. We drove to the end and couldn't turn around, so had to back the car out the whole way, so keep this in mind.
Excellent visit. Well informed volunteers. Also visited the old town lockup and Bishops Tower. An afternoon well spent.
This is a little gem tucked away in Paignton that is superbly presented and cared for by the volunteers who are so knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Special thanks to Lesley, our guide, and those who walked to show 2 very interested 9 years old the Clink where minor offenders were detained. Thoroughly pleased we made the trip.
This is a beautiful and well preserved historic house with some very interesting features. On this occasion we were lucky enough to have guided tour, led by someone who really knew her stuff, and was able to answer lots of questions about the history and construction of the house. For those who like their modern comforts, there is a toilet outside but no cafe or shop, but it is a stone's throw from the centre of Paignton so that is really not a problem. It's good to see that they have kept it simple and true to the original layout of the house.
Love the quirky design. It's like a labyrinth. The place looks a bit ancient but was pleasant to stay in
