The LIHS Glenfield Railway Tunnel is a historic railway tunnel located in Leicester, England. The tunnel is approximately 1.1 miles (1.8 km) long and was built in the mid-19th century as part of the Leicester and Swannington Railway. It features a distinctive curved shape and is constructed from brick and stone. The tunnel is still in use today, carrying freight and passenger trains on the Leicester to Burton upon Trent railway line.
It is a good place to volunteer. I advise everyone visiting the tunnel to wear winter clothes because inside the tunnel is 10-14degC.
Although it was a very short visit in to the tunnel it was very informative. I loved the history, maybe in years to come they could extend the tunnel and display more facts
Only found out about this place a short while ago and myself and a few friends decided to book a visit. The gentlemen who took us to and into the tunnel were very knowledgeable and interesting. Told us why and how it was built and how it came to be opened for us to see. It takes about an hour for the tour and is free to do but you do need to book. Definitely worth a visit.
Great experience to visit a part of our industrial heritage
Really worth a visit if you have an interest in railway or local history. Knowledgable guides and well presented.
This place is only open certain times of the year. I was able to go on a visit. We had a volunteer guide to take us through the tunnel, they give the history about what the tunnel was used for. A very interesting time enjoyed it.
