Great museum keeping the history of the Lancashire Coalfields alive. Plenty of things to gawp at, a narrow gauge railway and the last winding engine and pit head gear in situ in Lancashire. Well worth the visit. Free entry and donations welcome. There's a gift shop and refreshments available at reasonable prices.

What a fabulous place! Brought a friend from Yorkshire who has an interest in trains and anything historical. Loved the enthusiasm of the volunteers we spoke to. Spent 4 hours looking at all the exhibits and thoroughly enjoyed it! Will definitely visit again. Well done everyone involved for your hard work and dedication. Great afternoon out! Thank you!

I took my 8 year old daughter to this museum with my mum and grandma, I have to say it isnt a typical museum the history is so interesting better than any history lesson in schools. The lady in the miners cottage was so lovely and was very knowledgeable, she let us dress up as a working class family and showed my little one how to make a peg rug and shared so much information but made it fun and enjoyable that children will take the information in. I became more interested in the museum after learning some of peaky blinders was filmed at this site. I would recommend to anyone of any age all the volunteers are amazing and made the day fun and enjoyable.

Absolutely fascinating place, all the volunteers are lovely, very welcoming and knowledgeable, their stories bring the place alive. My grand daughter and I were dressed up in the miners cottage which was fun, the machinery is huge and I am looking forward to seeing it working as we WILL be visiting again on the day this takes place, please don't think this is not for you, there is something of interest for everyone, I can also recommend the tea room

A very worthwhile afternoon spent visiting this small, volunteer run, heritage museum established on the site of a former coal mine. The pit head is very impressive as is the massive winding engine which can be seen working on the final Sunday of each month. An interesting re-creation of a miner's cottage was brought to life by one of the volunteer staff dressed in a period costume. Great for children to experience home life so different to today. Definitely recommended.
