Description
The impressive City Museum is housed in Lancaster's former town hall, right on the edge of the busy Market Square. The elegant Georgian building was built between 1781-3 to the designs of Major Thomas Jarrett and Thomas Harrison. The museum itself was founded in 1923 and its wonderfully varied collection and dioramas lead visitors through the social and industrial history, archaeology of Lancaster, and the stories of the people who have made the city what it is today. Enjoy our fine art collection and the programme of changing exhibitions. The City Museum building is also home to the King's Own Royal Regiment Museum, a fascinating insight into the military heritage of the city's own regiment from 1680 onwards.

A small museum that is packed with tons of information & history. We learned a lot from our visit and got to enjoy a gallery on the way up to the museum showcase. Lovely staff in the store & the store had tons of great Lancaster merchandise that we enjoyed and purchased. Thanks for having us, would definitely recommend for those looking to learn more about the city of Lancaster & its rich history

Brilliant place to visit full of history from prehistoric through roman to World War II and beyond. Free entry and a lovely little gift shop full of trinkets and fridge magnets. All very well displayed in clean glass cabinets with a few interactive displays. In the heart of the city and only 10 minutes stroll from the railway station. Highly Recommended

Good local history collection, particularly the Roman and Anglo-Saxon galleries. They have the Burrow religious carvings and the Insus Cavalry Tombstone, which are well worth the visit alone. Shop was a bit limited. You have to get an entry ticket even though it's free, which was a bit odd. Closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Nice little museum in the centre of the city. There's nothing outstanding to plan a special visit for, it's just a pleasant way to spend an hour if you're passing. Friendly staff, and a good range of exhibits. Free entry, but you should donate some money to them anyway.

Popped in here with my young kids on a very rainy day. Excellent for them, and I found the fabric section really interesting

Free to enter, city centre museum that contains loads of historical information about Lancaster and it's surrounding area. Highly recommended, but be advised it won't take you all day to walk around, so plan another event on the same day if you are looking to fill your day.
