The Lancaster Maritime Museum stands watch over the now peaceful St. George's Quay, once a busy and bustling international port. Located in the beautiful former Custom House and Warehouse, the museum is family-friendly and visitors can take as long as they like walking through the galleries. Explore Lancaster's role in the Transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans, about the building of Lancaster Canal, and the inshore fishing industry of Morecambe Bay. Discover the dangers of crossing the sands and take in an exhibition.
This is a lovely museum with some history of the fishing and ship building industries in the local area, as well as a collection of very old coins and artifacts. It's very well done and quite engaging, with a film that explains some local history. The star of the show for me was the series of black and white photographs of fishermen and people from the canals. I am assured that a proper exhibition is on its way.
Really good afternoon out with children. Lots of history of Lancaster & Morecambe Bay area, the boats, trade & disasters. Information on Viking & other silver hoards found locally, plenty of activities. Free to local residents, limited on-road parking. Highly recommended.
Well presented displays of maritime and local items. You need to move to an adjacent warehouse where there are many stairs with an elevator available. Good with children because there are activities for them. We liked the place where you can dress up in costumes and then have your photo taken inside a gilt frame, with the telescope etc the children really liked it.
We visited with our Grandsons 11 & 14 thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Fascinating displays and exhibits really interesting for all the family. I highly recommend a visit.
A lovely flying visit before getting train home, we had to be quick as we entered an hour before closing, they were very accommodating though. Fabulous little museum with lots of things to touch and do for children. The boat, carriage and dressing up was especially a lovely touch. So much to look at another reason why I would love to go back and read up a little bit more. Lovely museum that sits on the river Lune. Thank you for your hospitality.
Excellent museum, really interesting displays, fun hands-on activities and very friendly staff. You can learn a lot in a short visit. Well explained exhibit on Lancaster's links to slavery. Be sure to explore all of the rooms and spend some time with Rosie and Jim :)
