Landguard Fort is a Grade 1 Listed building run by Landguard Fort Trust. It is the site of the last opposed invasion of England in 1667. Buildings date from 1745 with significant additions and alterations carried out in 1875. The site incorporates outlying gun batteries added at the end of the 19th century and contains the UK's only surviving defence headquarters from the cold war. Welcoming 27,000 plus visitors in 2019, Landguard Fort continues to develop as Felixstowe's leading tourist attraction. Our aim is to enhance public knowledge of Landguard Fort's long military history and a building of great historical and educational interest, to maintain and develop it a unique venue for special events and activities for the local community.
Fantastic place of history, lots of rooms with detailed information, dark corridors and arched ceilings add atmosphere. Very friendly staff, a lovely little tea shop with locally made cakes, refreshments included ciders and wine. Bigger than you are expecting I lost count of the number of rooms. Handy audio description guide on a lanyard to give details without reading display boards. Easily spent a couple of hours. Great observation platform to see what is across the water. Went with my husband and our 11 year old. I would go again.
Great place to visit. Was nice and quiet really loads of history within the walls of the fort. Quite a few steps to get to the upper levels. Very interesting to get to read signs and see the story of the fort.
I loved it. Came with no expectations but left as a fan! Tony our guide was the main reason for it . His guided tour was informative , yet lively with a good dose of humour. Brought the history and culture of Landguard Fort and the area to live. Further a tour costs a modest PS5 per person so would 100% recommend it. The fort looks way bigger than it seems on the outside and you'd need 1.5 hours at least to do justice. Very lovely spot and friendly staff and volunteers .
Great experience and very educational for everyone. We went on Saturday when three was a live shooting. Extremely noisy but a good experience. Not recommended for small kids. I had to take my children into a room and shut the door. The staff are all friendly and outgoing, lovely people. There is access for prams and wheels chairs. Also an audio tour available. Would definitely recommend.
Surprisingly interesting Heritage site. Much older than it looks with a fascinating history which is told via audio tour displays, videos and which can be found in every nook and cranny inside the fort.
Good audio guide which explains much of the confusing timeline of this strategic fort. Not a classic castle like Orford or Framingham, but equally interesting. The models at the end of the tour show the phases of construction: could really do with these being the start of the tour!
