The Leighton Buzzard Railway was built in 1919, from materials and equipment surplus from the First World War battlefield supply lines, to carry sand from the quarries to the north of Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire. On the brink of closure, it was taken over in 1967 by a group of volunteers who still run it today, through a limited company. The basic train ride runs from Page's Park, on the south side of Leighton Buzzard, to Stonehenge Works, to the north of the town, and the return journey takes 80 minutes. Party bookings can be made either on public services or on a charter basis. Refreshments are available at the Page's Park station buffet.
A great experience for the kids, staff are fantastic & friendly. We did the pirates day which was a fun filled time. Trains leave every few hours. Parking next to the station is free so you're only paying for the train ride, which we booked online before hand.
Visited for the bank holiday pirate special, and it was such a treat! The staff here are ridiculously friendly and helpful, and they all got into the zone as pirates and made the whole experience twice as great because they were all committed to their roles! The steam train ride is a lovely journey, and you get a pitstop at the end of the line where they have a small kids play area, exhibits to look at, and refreshments. The bank holiday special meant that anyone that wanted to get involved could sit in the open carriage armed with a water pistol, and then when the track turned into a twin track a carriage of pirates were waiting with pistols and cannons for an attack, what great fun!!!! In the main building back at base, there are some engine sheds to look at and a lovely cafe serving up breakfasts, hot and cold drinks, and delicious hot snacks and cakes.
Excellent heritage railway. Nice little shop and ticket office. The narrow gauge railway winds it's way through Leighton Buzzard to the old sand quarry at Stonehenge Works Station. The railway was built to transport the high grade sand to the Grand Union Canal. Lots to see at the depot and there's a small cafe and shop. Great little adventure, and such lovely people too.
Went to the pirate day, water pistol fights, great fun. Kids and dog really enjoyed themselves and a dog friendly cafe that serves all typed drinks and food.
Was enjoyable, wanted to have a close look at the engine but didn't get an opportunity to pity they don't allow you access to it. Ride is about 90 mins with food either Fish n Chips or Sausage and Chips with bottle of water and a flapjack for afters. The track is right in the middle now of Housing estates so you really don't see that much apart from back gardens which is a pity. Allrun by volunteers who do a grand job though. There are toilets, a shop and plenty of parking.
Narrow gauge railway. Good long run into the country. Small museum at the terminus. Good cafe at Pages Park. Recommended. Staff put on a big effort for the kids at Easter
