From beaches and crystal clear waters that rival luxury tropical islands, to its rich history and stunning scenery, this remote and spectacular destination in the Outer Hebrides is the perfect venue for wonderful memories. Overlooking Stornoway harbour, the impressive gothic-revival style castle was built in the mid 1800's by Sir James Matheson. Since then this beautiful building has also served as a hospital during WW2, a college, a school and now as an iconic wedding venue and luxurious self-catering holiday destination with Natural Retreats - it's the perfect Stornoway accommodation for a UK break.
Lews Castle is a really interesting place to visit. The museum is really well laid out and enjoyable to walk around. The cafe is excellent and the staff are really friendly and very helpful. You can walk around the gardens and the ground floor of the "castle " ( it's more of a stately home than a castle) and discover the fascinating history of the place. There is no charge but they do ask for a donation to hell maintain the property and estate. Would recommend.
Well worth a visit! This castle is an easy walk from the town. The grounds are extensive and very interesting. Suitable for the whole family. The cafe inside the castle serves snacks.
Great little museum, the Lewis chess men are on display and there is lots more information about the history of island life. There are some great interactive displays for children as well. We were also able to have a look around the ground floor rooms of the castle and download a virtual tour which was interesting. The cafe there is also good, lovely coffee and cake.
The staff at Lews, rooms and amenities were all impeccable. The rooms are nice sized apartments with all the amenities, including full kitchen, dish washer and even washing machine. The grounds had trails throughout and we took nightly walks to enjoy the scenery. Every morning I stopped down at the cafe for an egg sandwich and a coffee, the waitstaff was always nice, accommodating and friendly. If you ever need a home base on the Isle of Lewis and Harris, Lews Castle is the perfect place.
4 friends just spent a week here. What an impressive building inside and out. The 3 bedroom apartment we stayed was beautiful, very well equipped with everything we needed for our stay. And gave us a beautiful space to relax after a day's sightseeing. The staff were amazing, Christina and Matt could not do enough to make our stay memorable. Both so friendly, patiently answering our numerous questions and responding any requests we had. Would 100% recommend.
Afternoon tea was wonderful. The food was very tasty and there was plenty of it. The staff were polite, welcoming and could not do enough for us. Especially Matthew. Thank you so much. You are a credit to your work. 10/10.
