Llanmelin Wood Hillfort is an Iron Age hillfort situated in the Llanmelin Wood, near the village of Llanishen, in the county of Glamorgan, Wales. The fort is nestled on a hilltop, surrounded by dense woodland, and features a series of earthworks, including a single rampart and ditch, which enclose an area of approximately 12 acres. The fort's defenses are impressive, with steep slopes and a complex entrance system, suggesting that it was an important stronghold in its time. Archaeological excavations have revealed evidence of occupation from the 5th century BC to the 1st century AD, with finds including Iron Age pottery, coins, and metalwork. Today, the hillfort remains a fascinating and atmospheric site, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside and a glimpse into the lives of ancient Britons.
Mostly overgrown bit is amazing if photo taken from a drone saddly I don't have one however you can see the way the fort was set up it must have been huge I found it difficult to find as it has a small car park that sits just of the country road and is easy to miss but the countryside is stunning and the fort is worth a visit it's uphill to the fort and downhill when you walk back I took coffee and pork pies glad i did beautiful just so peaceful at this place worth a visit for sure bewair though it's overgrown long grass bit the fort can still be made out
Not a great deal to see but you can imagine how useful the hillfort would have been. Trees have grown to tall to see over now but it would have been a great outlook over Caerwent
Quite a large iron age fort , and very peaceful up there
Lovely walk up to the fort through the woods, great bit of history for a short walk around, lots of interesting flora there too.
