This 12th-century castle sits on an island in Loch Leven, surrounded by picturesque Scottish countryside. The castle's rugged stone walls and towers rise dramatically from the water, creating a romantic and atmospheric scene. Visitors can take a ferry to the island and explore the castle's historic halls, chapel, and battlements, learning about its rich history and former residents, including Mary Queen of Scots.
Fab boat trip over to the island, the castle is very interesting, lots of picnic benches and there are toilets at the pier and on the island. Wear good footwear especially if walking round the island as it can be wet and muddy. Lots of car parking and nice coffee shops a few mins walk. You can follow the path around the Loch after its a great walk full of wildlife.
It was the most gorgeous day, 27 April 2024. On the boat at 10am with only 3 other people. The skipper was Steve. He explained a bit about the wildlife in the loch. The loch was as smooth as a mirror. Castle visit was wonderful. Definitely book tickets in advance! And see the boat times in the last picture.
Absolutely beautiful castle on island boat ride is great you get some information from boat driver best to have decent jacket it gets cold on island. First time i booked to go they phoned up to cancel due to water being choppy and unsafe but was able to rebook.
