A huge expanse of open water, Loch Leven provides an ideal home for countless birds. Watch the quiet persistence of tufted duck diving for food, or marvel at the awe-inspiring sight of huge flocks of wintering wildfowl. In summer, ospreys patrol the loch in search of a fish supper. And on the marshy margins your nose might lead you to sweetly scented holy grass - an ancient form of incense. Burleigh Sands is a great place to explore Loch Leven from. Join the heritage trail - walk or bike the full trail round the loch or just do a section. Scottish Natural Heritage manages Loch Leven NNR.
An absolutely gorgeous walking location. The full loop will take you a good few hours. But the views are lovely. Managed to visit during fantastic weather in summer with fields in full bloom. Not all the paths go directly by the waterside, some paths through woodland and fields. This is a nature preserve for the birds so be cautious of them with dogs and going off the path. I parked by Burleigh sands which is a beautiful small sandy beach with a lovely view. Some lovely attractions around, and within the Loch itself.
You can cycle around it... it is very flat, it only has a bit of a climb at the park information point. Here you have to pay for parking... in town it's free. You can also have a spectacular view of the lake if you climb the mountain along the trail at the natural park information point. It is a very peaceful and beautiful place. The groups of wild geese are fantastic to see, especially during the breeding season with their friendly chicks. And on an islet is the historic castle.
An amazing place to camp/park overnight and for free. Get there earlyish to make sure of a spot. I personally found this Loch and the surroundings very peaceful and relaxing. As with most of Scotland - there are great views!
Fantastic place, loads to do all around Loch Leven. Many access points around the loch so map is essential. Walk around Loch is approx 13 miles so plan in advance. Stop at Loch Leven Larder on the North shore for lunch or RSPB Vane Farm nature reserve on the South Shore. Loch prone to blue green algae so be careful. Get more information on line. Still a lovely place to be. Nearest town is Kinross.
Nice place for a walk, bike ride or canoeing. There are a few hides for bird watching. Toilet works with 20p coin. Nice playground for the children. No overnight stay sign up, but we stayed for the night without issue.
Great starting spot to walk around the loch. Good for prams/ wheelchairs, as roads are pretty straight.
