This medieval fortress, built in the 12th century, stands on a hill overlooking the village of Ludgershall in Wiltshire, England. The castle's stone walls, towers, and curtain walls are well-preserved, giving visitors a glimpse into its rich history. The castle's architecture is a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles, with features such as a grand hall, chapel, and battlements. The castle has served as a royal residence, a military stronghold, and even a prison, with famous inmates including King Stephen and Empress Matilda. Today, Ludgershall Castle is a popular tourist attraction, offering guided tours and stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
This ruin is a nice little find. Free to walk around but there isn't much parking close by or any toilets. The remaining tower has metal fencing/barrier around it for safety reasons but they didn't do the best job with it. A lovely place for a picnic on a sunny day.
There is not much to see as it's mostly ruins. It's free, no toilets it's lovely to visit when you passing by to stop for picnic as its very quite, or just for break from driving, I would not recommend driving all the way to see it as its not worth it if you passing by yes stop have break and picnic other than that I would not bothered.
Small amount of parking (10 cars?). All free. Entrance free. No facilities. It's not absolutely clear which is the way to get to the ruins as the English Heritage info board is half way between a road and a small gated path to the West ..important to us as my Father can't walk much. As it happens both work, but the road is easier and more direct. Not much left...a crumbling tower...some stone foundations..a few ditches...a house built across some of the ramparts....there's a very nice old tree! Maybe good to visit this and Old Sarum at the same time..
Awesome castle ruins. Not a lot here but it's still great to take a look at and maybe sit and have a picnic too. Great piece of history and I really enjoyed walking around the ruins. It's free to visit. I'd definitely go back again.
A nice piece of history, which with time has sadly been eroding away from us. There is sadly not too much to see at these ruins. However, the boards provided by EH do give some good imagination of what once this castle was like back in the heyday. I would recommend popping down for a look if you're into your history of our country, or even if you like to have some relaxation. Which it is indeed quite a nice quiet spot for as small picnic.
Lovely for a walk round. Not suitable for wheelchairs. Plenty of butterflies on the ivy this autumn.
