Amazing history about the place. The guy there gave lots of information about the hoose itself and some photos of the family etc. Definitely worth a visit. Suggested donation, but make sure you have cash on you!! Well worth it. Only open for a couple of hours.
Really fascinating place. An old fisherman's cottage, comprising essentially of two rooms (albeit rather effectively utilised to make more). A very helpful, friendly and informative man guided us around the house, explaining how families lived in these types of houses (this one has been preserved following the death of its last owner, Maggie, in 1950), using his knowledge and plenty of original features and artefacts, and I was astonished and impressed to learn that a family of perhaps 10 would love in such a tiny house. We also learnt about how they used to fish, store and trade their wares. There was a suggested donation of PS5 for each adult (children free), and I gladly paid that for my 20 or so minutes in Maggie's Hoosie.
Maggies Hoosie, is an example of an early 19th Century, 'but'n ben' pantiled roofed, fisher cottage. It has a clay, sanded floor of a type which was to be found throughout the coastal fishing villages of Aberdeenshire, and it is furnished with fittings and domestic goods of the period. Maggie Duthie, was born in 1867, and died in 1950, the house being left by her in the same condition it was when she died, mainly unchanged from when she was a child, with no added modern conveniences.
