My office was in this hardened facility in 1992-93 when I was the Chief of Maintenance for the USAF 95th Reconnaissance Squadron. The building housed U-2/TR-1 avionics maintenance test and repair stations as well as staff offices.
Really interesting look back to the Cold War! Built for the TR1 aircraft based at RAF Alconbury. Unfortunately it was completed the afternoon before the Iron Cutain dissolved and the Cold War ended!
One of the best preserved Cold War bunkers in the UK. The "Magic Mountain" nickname is incorrect. If the base personnel referred to building as anything other than the avionics building then the nickname used was "Dragon Mountain" As the bunker was used to service the avionics of TR-1/ U2 aircraft, These aircraft are nicknamed "Dragon lady's" and the technician's referred to themselves as "Dragon Keepers" so the "Dragon Mountain" nickname makes a lot more sense than "magic mountain"
A great place showing some of the secrets of the cold war, and a place that should become a great place for the community
Puts Alconbury on the map, simply must be seen to be believed.
Cold war stuff . powerful
