This museum showcases the history and culture of Mallaig and the surrounding area, with exhibits on the local fishing industry, the railway, and the village's role in World War II. The centre also features displays on the natural history of the region, including its geology, wildlife, and scenic beauty. Visitors can explore interactive exhibits, watch films, and view artifacts and photographs that tell the story of Mallaig's past.
Always good to visit the local museum! Small entrance fee (GBP 2.50 for seniors, 3.00 for younger adults). Gift shop at the entrance. Exhibits about geology, volcanology, the local RNLI, development and economy of the area and local residents' stories. Located beside/behind the railway station.
Really well worth a visit. Very interesting displays of local fishing history and quite a lot devoted to the railway history of the Mallaig line, which I was particularly interested in. A very interesting feature was individual up to date photographs of people who had appeared in a class photo from the early 1980s. The photos showed what their life is like today, and the accompanying text told how happy or unhappy they were were with how their life had turned out. Very thought provoking!
Lady who was in there was so helpful when I explained I was looking in to my family history. The artifacts and information all around the centre is great. Well worth the admission fee
We were waiting for the Jacobite train to arrive so in the mean time we popped into this place. Really loved it. Simple and well structured place. Explaining the history and lifestyle of Mallaig. Well worth it.
Super little museum. We enjoyed doing the the questionnaire sheet. The lovely lady on duty shared a lot of information aboutbher life and memories with us.
