What a wonderful small museum. 2 rooms with plenty of information about Malton's history. Roman artifacts and history of roman occupation fill one room where the Pocklington Sword takes pride of place. The second room takes the story of Malton onwards through water navigation, rail, Mills and breweries. Also Free Gardeners ( think Masons for Gardeners) and Jet jewellery exhibits and history.
A wonderful,informative and clean museum period displays ranging from early Neolithic to the 1950s . Staff are very knowledgeable and polite a well positioned museum in the centre or the town with easy access. Well worth a visit.
I love this place, it's down side is that it has far more artefacts than room to display them but I believe they are hoping to find larger premises. The staff (volunteers) are friendly, knowledgeable and more than willing to answer any questions you may have. They run walking tours covering various aspects of local history, so far I have joined three of the tours and intend to do them all. They also run a Roman weekend at orchard fields which is on my to do list but so far I haven't managed to get there. I hope it finds bigger premises soon, the staff deserve it, they work so hard and enjoy sharing their knowledge with the public.
The staff at Malton museum are all incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. Chrissy really took time to ensure we knew about the current exhibition and kindly answered all our questions. The museum is small, so don't expect vast rooms, but it's definitely worth a visit. And, as with all smaller local museums, you get the sense that they could build on the existing collection if they had more funding. The museum has been thoughtfully curated and there were extensive activities for children. This is a museum that really cares about local heritage.
