This 12-hectare nature reserve is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Mapperley, Nottinghamshire. The reserve is characterized by its diverse range of habitats, including ancient woodland, grassland, and wetlands, which provide a haven for a wide variety of flora and fauna. Visitors can explore the reserve's network of winding paths and trails, taking in the sights and sounds of nature. The woodland is dominated by mature oak, beech, and birch trees, while the grasslands are home to a colorful array of wildflowers, including orchids, cowslips, and knapweed. The wetlands, meanwhile, attract a range of birdlife, including herons, kingfishers, and dragonflies. Throughout the reserve, visitors can discover hidden clearings, ancient tree stumps, and historic features, such as the remnants of an old quarry and a disused railway line.
A lovely place to park up for a walk . Entrance to the car park is via Mapperly village. You can then walk up to Shipley Park visitors centre down the hill to Osbourne's Pond , then walk up to Derby Lodge for a coffee and cake. You can then sit and enjoy them on the site by the water. Great day out without it costing alot. What more could you ask for in late November. I didn't have a cake I had a Bacon and Sausage Cob it was fabulous.
Wood, meadows and lake - could spend all day.
Love it there
