Martyr's Stake is a historic monument located in Smithfield, London, marking the site where numerous martyrs were burned at the stake during the Marian Persecutions of 1555-1558. The stake itself is no longer present, but a plaque and a small stone monument commemorate the spot where the executions took place.
Local history worth a 30mins walk own to this by the church or 5min drive with a small car park there
You can see it from the path that leads to the harbour. Just a shame the boardwalk is in such a terrible state to walk on they had to close it The good news is there hoping to get it reopen for December if the funds they have can cover the builders cost.
A recurrent theme in these reviews is the state of the boardwalk to the monument. I can report that at Christmas 2022 it is again in a very poor state of repair. Parts have collapsed and road cones have been placed there as if that somehow makes it okay. It was very slippery, and negotiating the damaged sections just added to the sense of achievement in reaching the memorial stone. Given the gravity of the circumstances commemorated here, it would be nice to see a little more care for the site. Other than that, if you fancy a challenge, it is worth a visit. Don't let the prospect of twisting your ankle put you off.
A rather sombre and melancholy place, which is not surprising considering what happened there. It is easy to find from the town and the new boardwalk is impressive. Bear in mind though, the river has changed course over the years and the monument is now in the middle of salt marsh.
Visited on a September evening whilst out on my mountain bike. The monument is situated along a shoreline path 1 mile from the small carpark close to the church where the martyrs are buried. The path continues along the shoreline another mile to the other side of town. Worth a visit if you are in the area. The town is beautiful.
Such a sad story of the 2 martyrs, deffo worth a visit a very peaceful place ,historic if you like that sort of thing, close parking nearby just pass the church on the left carry on down the road and a small parking spot on the left ,then a not to long a walk to the martyrs stake .
