This 19th-century cottage, nestled in the picturesque countryside of Cumbria, is a charming example of rural living. With its whitewashed walls, slate roof, and climbing roses, the cottage exudes a sense of warmth and coziness. The interior features a delightful mix of antique furnishings and vintage decor, transporting visitors back in time. Outside, a beautiful garden filled with colorful flowers and lush greenery invites exploration and relaxation.
Fascinating insight to croft life in the previous centuries. Our guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. Well worth a visit.
So lovely to step back in time to Mary Ann's life through this very informative tour of her cottage. It's a beautiful little preserved cottage in a stunning setting in the Highlands. The tour is PS5 for adults but children are free and we were given a lovely postcard at the end of our visit. The carpark is right next to the cottage so no problem for access and we didn't have to wait to enter despite there being other families visiting. It's a small cottage but the tour is extremely thorough and our tour guide knew Mary Ann personally which was a lovely touch.
What a wonderful little find this was. We met two wonderful ladies who do have wonderful but strong accents. Give your ears time to adjust. Both my wife and I were taken to each room, where we were told about the story of Mary and her life. There is plenty of historical language that should be remembered and historical items to see. We were there for almost two hrs, and even though it's PS5 per adult, it's certainly worth it. Makes it more special when you ask questions and ask about the farm and the equipment. It's a great trip down historical life. Support this small bit of history, I know I will.
What a gem of a place to visit. So much information about crofting life definitely not to be missed
Fascinating cluster comprising a house and several agricultural buildings, all set in a beautiful corner of Caithness. Rather than being 'a step back in time,' it was a window into a farming family's life over many decades. The knowledgeable and friendly volunteers bring the objects to life; one almost feels the occupants have just stepped outside for a moment. This is history where it was made, and not removed piece by piece into a museum.
Amazing little museum! Left just as it was when the family lived here. Volunteers make it all very interesting and show you around with lots of insightful info. If you have have an hour free on the way to Dunnet Head or John'O Groats, pop in for a quick visit. Entry is free with donation welcomed.
