'Mary Anning Rocks Statue for Mary' A long over due monument to the remarkable palaeontologist Mary Anning. The statue was paid for by people power with a crowdfund campaign and the statue was created by artist Denise Dutton. Mary was unveiled on her 223rd Birthday on Saturday the 21st may 2022 by professor Alice Roberts.
Lyme Regis never fails to astonish. We went enmasse, and trying to please all in the party for dietary requirements could have been a task, but Lyme Regis has a plethora of eateries to suit everyone. The kids (18) ate at the pub on the harbour. There is a glorious bakery up the hill by the pay and display carpark and a tesco for those in need of just protein. Carpark was empty-ish when we arrived at 11.30 am. Was full, with people queuing when we left at 2.30pm. Weather was glorious. We were lucky. Felt positively balmy! Always check the weather as it has its own micro-climate there. Parking reasonably priced. There is also a lower car park nearer the front for those who can not walk as far as the NCP beside Tesco. Lots of coffee/tea stops along the front. The harbour cobb is SLIPPERY! Be warned. Also, sandflies were highly abundant when we went in December. Wear a scarf as they'll infest your hair and ears closer to the Cobb. The Mary Anning Statue is placed well, overlooking the fossil pavements. She is glorious! Well worth a visit for budding palaeontologist! All round, a glorious visit. There are many dogs, remember to watch where you walk and always bring poo-bags. Great pet shop half way up the hill with lots of lovely gifts. The bookshop is particularly remarkable and worth a visit! So many wonderful shops.
A lifelike statue of Mary Anning walking down to the beach with her basket & dog to collect fossils. When the path is busy it just looks like she is striding out with the crowd. It is a lovely natural looking sculpture. I'm glad she now has public recognition as the mother of paleontology. Look out for the amonite details on her skirt.
A stunning & long overdue addition to Lyme Regis. Well done to all involved to make it happen. Such great work from sculptor Denise Dutton and we were so happy to be at the unveiling in May 2022. Thank you.
Lyme Regis is a great place, plenty to do for all. As for reviewing this statue... Well she didn't say much, but she had a nice dog!
A beautiful statue of Mary Anning overlooking the wintry sea not far from her grave. At least she gets the recognition now for what she achieved in her lifetime!
A brilliant tribute to Mary Anning. First class bronze depicting Mary and her dog trudging along in a quest to discover more. Very fitting location and from a tourists point of view a big thanks to all who contributed to the statue. I did have a smile as I overheard a small boy ask his grandad " why is she eating a pasty"? Envy?
