Meaux Abbey is a ruined abbey located in Meaux, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The abbey was founded in 1151 by William le Gros, Earl of Albemarle, and was dedicated to St. John the Evangelist. It was a Cistercian monastery, and its monks were known for their skills in agriculture, medicine, and craftsmanship. The abbey was suppressed in 1538 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII, and its buildings were largely demolished. Today, only the abbey's church and a few surrounding buildings remain, although the site still retains much of its original charm and tranquility.
There is no where to park adjacent to the Abbey and the route in is very over grown. Only really accessible now if you are hiking or have a machete. There is not even a sign to show it's existence from the road. Obviously neglected.
Meaux Abbey was founded in 1150 by William le gros, Earl of Albemarle, and Lord of Holderness. It was peopled with cistercian monks from Fountains Abbey. The Abbey was very wealthy, having large lands and a windmill, a watermill at brough, warrens and pasture for 800 sheep Fisheries and saltpans. Overtime the value of the lands was greatly reduced, in 1256 the sea rushed up the Humber and flooded their lands extending as far as Cottingham destroying many of their servants and cattle and washing away considerable quantities of their land. The Abbey was said to have been a magnificent pile, but all that now remains is an arched gateway and a fragment of wall. In 1542, after the dissolution of the monasteries, Henry Vlll ordered the defences and walls of hull to be reinforced and improved. Some of the stones from Meaux Abbey were used in the construction completed in 1543. The rest of the stone from the abby was taken by the locals for building. Circuit of the Abbey enclosed an area of 60 acres. The deep moats that protected it are still visible. It's not really worth visiting the area as there is very little to see today.
