A tranquil retreat off the coast of Essex, Mersea Island is a haven for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful escape from city life. The island's picturesque landscape is characterized by rolling hills, sandy beaches, and salt marshes, providing a habitat for a diverse range of wildlife, including birds, fish, and mammals. Visitors can explore the island's scenic trails, visit the 18th-century Church of St Peter and St Paul, and enjoy water sports and activities on the island's shores.
Has a real island feel as the only way onto Mersea Island by vehicle or bike is via the causeway which can separate the island at high tide; check the tide times. The causeway would be fascinating to sit and watch the tide coming in but there is no place to park and view, there's a potholed muddy parking area. Even if you wanted to get out and walk the pavement either side of the causeway you couldn't as the traffic speed is frightening trying to cross the road. A real visitors attraction opportunity missed. The photos I took were taken as we parked our bikes on the pavement to take a few photos. The main population and shops is West Mersea a traditional English Town with many independent shops. Yachting and other water activities take place.
Had a fantastic day on our bikes! But do check ride times!! We got stuck for an hour!
Mersea is a beautiful island to visit any time. The sunsets are sensational as you look out over the water. Best seen on foot, get out of your car and walk. Don't expect to park near the harbour. Please take your litter home with you.
A little known Gem, a jewel by the sea, such a beautiful spot, the ferry to the island is nice, or drive when the tide is low, we picked fresh samphire which grows naturally on the shore, just enough for one meal, i would never abuse that, your'e defiantly in the elements here, surrounded by fresh air, sea breeze and raw nature at its finest, the locals are super friendly and helpful, its a great day out, either with the kids, family etc or can be romantic, its probably a cool spot to visit alone, its so rugged you become part of nature, from finding this spot 25 years ago to now it will always hold a special place in my heart, the kids love catching crabs on the bay, we always put them back without harm, nature is so giving especially when you don't abuse it. Thank you
Like stepping back in time. Everywhere seems to be within walking distance. The beach is nice and the seafood exceptional.
