Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre is dedicated to the men and women who served at RAF Metheringham from November 1943 until the end of the Second World War. An Arts Council England accredited museum, we preserve and conserve the collection of artefacts, care for the wartime buildings, educate the public about the story of and act as a memorial to 106 Squadron, RAF Metheringham, 5 Group, Bomber Command and the Royal Air Force during World War Two ensuring all involved are remembered. We also reflect the aeromedical aspect of the Dakota aircraft. Our C47 wears a USAAF identification on its left side. This is in honour of those injured United States Service Personnel who were `casevac` and repatriated back to the US via RAF Metheringham.
Very well kept site. Friendly and Informative volunteers. Nice amount of things to do and learn. Dakota and exhibits in immaculate condition. Story of the 106 squadron told well. Small canteen and gift shop very pleasant. Lovely day , give yourself a couple of hours.
This museum is bigger than it looks on the net, staff were all great and knowledgeable and very glad to see me and my dog Arthur, the dc3/c47 Dakota is a great exhibit and let arthur on board too, the old runway remains aren't far away and worth finding definitely a must see museum.
Fantastic attraction, well worth a visit whether you're local or visiting from overseas. The C-47 is extremely well presented, and I learned quite a bit from the other exhibits as well. And I saw a Lancaster fly overhead, which was a bonus!
Very interesting museum run by a very knowledgeable group of volunteers. Although may be considered a small museum there are numerous interesting artefacts. The most interesting being the Douglas DC3 in full military guise. A bonus is that visitors can go inside it with an opportunity to sit in the cockpit. An additional bonus on the day we visited was a fly pass by the Red Arrows on their way to a display at Cleethorpes. Well worth a visit.
Visited here as part of a scout group. The volunteers were engaging and informative, able to talk to our Beavers and Cubs in an age appropriate way while still delivering important information. The activities they planned were great, and our Beavers and Cubs haven't stopped talking about the visit. We will definitely arrange another visit in the future.
Words cannot express how much I enjoyed this visit. This was just meant to be a short visit before the trip home. This ended up being one of the best museums I've ever visited. Wow! The staff are amazing and incredible people. So friendly and welcoming and very knowledgeable. My first stop was the memorial garden which has a rather amazing spitfire model. The gates to the garden are so beautiful. My second stop was the Dakota hangar. Amazing aircraft. Even more so is the fact that you can go inside it and get a real feel for the conditions those brave people went through. The guide explained everything in great detail. You even get to sit in the cockpit and the radio operator and navigator seats. Absolutely fascinating stuff. I cannot thank the guide enough for all the great information. My next stops were the various remaining airfield buildings with all the incredible displays. So much information so many stories they've managed to put together. My next stop was the cafe! This was also inside an old building. This isn't just the cafe it also has pieces of aircraft, displays and also a huge model Lancaster. You can also pass through to the memorial room which is very touching. This wasn't the end of my visit either! You can walk a bit farther down past the cafe and go inside the old air raid shelter. There is a small shop selling all sorts of books/ photos/toys etc. Staff deserve yet another mention for being friendly, helpful and so welcoming. The leaflet for the centre says this museum is a hidden gem in bomber county. This is truly an understatement. I will definitely visit again and again because there is just too much to see in just one visit. Thank you to all the staff for making this such an enjoyable day out!
