Britain's first purpose-built public observatory enjoys a magnificent woodland setting on the summit of Balgay Hill. Watch stars and planets through our telescopes, or admire the scenery with some spectacular treetop vistas across the silvery Tay. With fascinating space exploration and astronomical displays, planetarium shows and a fully computerised telescope that can detect 30,000 objects in the sky, there's so much to see, do and learn! Open on selected dates April-September. See website for details.
Free view point of the city. The telescope part was closed, but nice place. The park itself is also great.
Wow, what a great place. Can really only be visited at night time when it's dark and if there are clear skies. Keep in mind that it's not open all year round, and it's run by volunteers and funded by donations. The drive up to the observatory is tricky, it's on narrow paths, dimly lit and tight if trying to pass other vehicles, but there is parking for around 10 cars. You'll probably spend around 30 minutes to an hour here. The staff are always willing to talk about the exhibts and answer questions.
Wasn't a whole lot going on but it was perfect in its own little way, entry is free and it will now be one of my cherished memories
An absolute gem that we're lucky to have in Dundee. The staff are great- so knowledgeable and we always leave knowing something new. My son loves the place, and asks almost every night if we can go.
Lovely staff very informative and attentive. We got to see the moon, 7sisters and orion constellations through the telescops soo incredible and pretty. Its free to visit and you can go upstairs and get the best bits.
Stuart at the observatory was very kind helpful. Gave us a tour of the deck and the telescope
