Welcome to Milton's Cottage - only surviving residence of the visionary poet and parliamentarian, John Milton. It was here that he completed his epic masterpiece, Paradise Lost, and was inspired to write its sequel, Paradise Regain'd. Milton's Cottage has been open to the public since 1887, making it one of the oldest writers house museums in the world. Grade I listed, It retains the charm of the 17th century home Milton would have known, whilst housing one of the world's most important collections of his work on public display. It is also home to a Grade II registered garden, planted with trees, flowers and fruits referenced in his poetry.
Small, but perfectly formed museum home of John milton, where he wrote paradise lost. Already blind at this point he dictated the words to friends and family to get this epic piece of literature down. There are books and pamphlets written by him and show an Interesting political side of his writings that i was unaware of. The museum was very quiet and we had an informative tour by the volunteer. The cottage garden to rear of the house is spectacular and well worth an explore. There is no parking near the house, though there is a car park in the village some 5 mins awaywhich gives the first hours parking as free. We'll worth a visit.
