This reserve is a remnant of the ancient Forest of Rockingham, featuring a mix of woodland, grassland, and scrub habitats. The site is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including ancient trees, wildflowers, and various species of birds, insects, and mammals. A network of trails and pathways allows visitors to explore the reserve, which also features a number of scenic viewpoints and picnic areas.
Nice woods lots of different paths . However be warned it is really muddy and some of the paths are therefore impassable even for my dog without sinking in mud and almost getting stuck. The woods are quite dense and best to stick to main paths which are also less boggy. Los od elderflower ana wild roses in bloom at the moment and there is a butterfly walk. Didn't get to see any though. There is no real car park you can park for free though in the layby near the entrance.
This is a very large and potentially taxing walk for the older section of wildlife lovers. My wife and I managed about half of the butterfly trail, which was mostly a wooded area, with a small crossing of a multi-grassland field (very pretty). Our entry point was from the North-East point, which had room for about six cars parked off road. Just a question for others who have visited. Is there anyway you can post a photo of the area on a map, where the water with large stones in it. I would love to go there to take some photos but have no idea where the closest parking spot is. For those who like to take a camera, a close-up lens for the insects is needed but there are plenty of opportunities for wider shots of the woods. The paths were mainly dry, but I would imagine after a couple of days of rain there might be a problem for some. I've posted a few shots I made on what was a very sunny day.
Nice surprise finding this walk through the woods. The butterfly path was unattended in some areas, extremely narrow and full of plants with thorns that scratched us and the children, so get some wellies and long sleeve shirts at least. Have seen dozens of different types of butterflies. Cannot wait to return.
Been here a couple of times and I'm not sure if I'm taking the wrong paths but there doesn't really appear to be much, not sure why it's reviewed so highly. Nice enough place for a walk though.
Very nice place to go for a walk and picnic. Remember to take your swimwear so that you can have a dip in the stream
Boggy in all directions, it's mid April and 23 haven't had much rain lately so its a bit surprising. There isn't a car park, its basically a ditch on the roadside.
