Monteviot Gardens provide an extraordinary foreground to the wonderful backdrop of the curving and winding River Teviot and the hills beyond. They consist of a number of distinct gardens each leading to the next designed to display interesting and special plants, great colour, and innovative designs and ideas. The gardens are open to the public every day from 1st April to 31st October from 12 to 5pm (with last entry at 4pm).
Luscious understated, very well maintained. Saw a deer. Plenty of rabbits. Pleasant coffee shed and plant sales. Good toilets with views to the tennis court.
A fabulous garden set in beautiful grounds in the Scottish Borders. My recommendation is not to follow the signs but to let your legs do the direction choosing. Highly recommended the Winter Garden (shame we canny see it in Winter) and the Water Garden (which are beautiful). The Arboretum is also worth a wonder around. Facilities a little basic and at the time of writing, entry is PS6 per person (cards only)
We had a wonderful visit to the Monteviot Lights show which was taking place between 30th Nov and the 10th Dec 2023. We had visited the courtyard cafe a playground a few times over the years, but this was our first seeing the garden. As this was an evening visit, we didn't get to see the garden in it's natural state. It was however a magical and enchanting experience seeing it beautifully lit and with music playing as you walked around. Well worth a visit if you're visiting the Scottish Borders or looking for an evening activity in Dec 2023. There were toilets at the beginning and also half way through the walk by the food stalls. The route is pretty accessible, we have a small pram and that worked well. Free parking and easy to find just off the A68 near Jedburgh.
Several hours spent enjoying large and varied garden styles, planting and parkland. Stunning terraces and views of the Teviot. Great signposting, and huge selection of hydrangeas in borders. Find the impish sculpture of Gregory the Gatekeeper, or the white stag. Visited during a showery afternoon.
The gardens are simply stunning. The vista from the top of the gardens down to the river is, on its own, worth the entrance fee! As you explore each section of the garden in more detail (the winter garden, the rose garden, the garden of the imagination, etc), you can sense the passion and imagination that went in to making each element a unique jewel in its own right. Highly recommended... and then go to the Out-There Artisan cafe at Harestanes for a well-deserved snack!
