OPEN - FRIDAY 10am-4pm, SATURDAY 10am-4pm and SUNDAY 12-4pm (Weather Permitting) LAST ENTRY 3pm. Children get free entry and must be supervised by an adult at all times. Montrose was Great Britain's first operational military airfield, established by the RFC in February 1913. It is an independent, accredited museum run entirely by volunteers. Aircraft include a Panavia Tornado GR4, SEPECAT Jaguar GR1, Hawker Hunter F1, Gloster Meteor and a de Havilland Sea Vampire. There is also a full-size replica Supermarine Spitfire MkVb and our volunteers have built amazing full-size replicas of a WWI B.E.2a and a Sopwith Camel, the only ones in Scotland.
Entry fee is PS8 for adults and PS7 for concession. With the ticket, you will get access to view the HQ building, renovation building, the Library, Robertson building, and the Butler building. You HAVE TO attend the tour of the Tornado where the volunteers would bring you down to the hangar where they house the Tornado fighter jet. Do ask the volunteers on the timings where you could see the torpedo! Overall, I am satisfied with the visit. Although a short attraction, the Tornado viewing takes the cake!
My kids took me here for my birthday because they know how much I love planes. I am plane crazy. Turned out to be an amazing birthday gift. First things first, the Tornado GR4 is awesome. Much bigger and brutish up close. Could have stood around and looked up at it for hours. The other exhibits were well layed out and there were plenty of thoughtful explanations. The WW1 Sopwith Camels were another highlight and amazing to contrast the technology with the modern jets. The staff were really friendly and informative. Much more than the exhibits, small museums like this live and die by the commitment of the staff. Very reasonable price also. Usually when I step out the house with the kids it is 50 quid minimum no matter what we do. This was only around PS8 for adults and free for kids. A lot of the exhibits are in hangers so the coastal weather is not much of an issue.
I loved it here, the Hawker Hunter is so much bigger than I thought it would be. The tornado is epic. Well worth a visit, the staff are super friendly and knowledgeable.
Great few hours spent walking around the Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre. Great volunteers, very knowledgeable and friendly. I would definitely recommend a visit if in the area A+
Brilliant place for a visit. We missed the new exhibition by a few days, but was shown the aircraft on the CCTV being readied for display.
This was not our first visit here, but it was well worth the return visit. We took our grandchildren, and they really enjoyed it (children free entry) adults PS6.00 concessions for pensioners. The staff and volunteers are very good and knowledgeable. There are things for children to do and play on, including dressing up.
