The Mote of Mark is a 12th-century motte-and-bailey castle situated in Mark, Somerset, England. The castle features a large earthen mound surrounded by a dry ditch, with a wooden palisade on top. Although the original wooden structure has not survived, the earthworks remain impressive, with the motte rising 40 feet above the surrounding countryside. The site is now a scheduled ancient monument and is open to the public.
Fantastic views. Think twice before going to the top in wind and rain though.
Really pleased to have found where to climb up to the top as path hidden and quite hard to climb up. Worth it though for the view
Great views of the Solway, short but steep climb with stones that our nine year old English sheepdog managed fairly well although she felt more secure with her lead. I would be hesitant to take young children up this path. Lovely walks roundabout.
Great gentle walk with outstanding views from the top although it could do with better signage, if you are going from Rockcliffe then look out for the stone with blue and yellow arrows and follow the blue arrow
Impressively large earthwork that was clearly of some significance around the 8th century. Not sure if you can access the motte itself as in the day we went we had shorts on and a local warned us it had become overgrown and there was a risk of mites! The overgrown bit is the path down from the crossroads with a sign post on the Kippford to Rockcliffe path, so if you come from Kippford end carry on and you'll see an open field with a cattle grid which gives better access is the side the history panel is on. Worth a look if your in Rockcliffe or Kippford.
What a great find! Worth the effort climbing to the top for the stunning view.
