The Mound of Down is a prominent earthwork located in the town of Downpatrick, County Down, Northern Ireland. It is believed to be a ancient Celtic ring fort, dating back to the Iron Age period. The mound is approximately 30 meters in diameter and 5 meters high, surrounded by a ditch and a bank. It is thought to have been used as a defensive structure, providing protection to the inhabitants of the surrounding area. Today, the Mound of Down is a popular tourist attraction and a significant historical site, offering insight into the region's rich cultural heritage.
Amazing view from the inner mounds. It's a lovely almost rural feeling walk. Dog walkers however need to lift their dogs in through the entry gate and down the path slightly as there is some glass. Good walking shoes should also be worn as it can be very steep at some places.
Amazing. I can comfortably let my greyhound out here to run around and the 360 view from the very top is lovely
Most of the ancient sites around Ireland are well traveled and heavily modified. This Dal Fiatach site is not. From the mound there are fantastic early morning (and late evening) views of the surrounding hills and Down Cathedral. Going early in the morning also gives you a chance to experience the sounds and smells of historic Down. The only annoying thing is the water treatment plant.
Live this walk, handy to the town and just across from the quoile walk, lovely views of the area & peaceful
Fascinating piece of history and stunning location, great for dog walking too, although beware, there was glass on the ground in the car park, which is a shame.
Iron age earthworks fort. Mound within is a curious shape. Between Downpatrick town and Marshes. The whole area has references to the didtant past with the Nearby scenic ruins of Inch Abbey. Down Cathedral which is reputed to be the burial place of St Patrick.
Good for kids
