Mainland Scotland's first lighthouse has been converted into a museum of maritime history.
The tour of the lighthouse is great! Well presented commentary, interesting exhibits and great view from the top (you get to go outside). Amazing that the tower was originally part of a castle. The only wait is for the tour time/ people to gather. Toilets available. Some gorgeous souvenirs. Interesting museum if you're into lighthouses, their history, builders and the people who operated them (now automated)
We paid PS11 for a ticket that gives you access to the museum, as well as a 45 minutes tour of the lighthouse (yes, you get to go to the top of it!). Michael was our tour guide and he is extremely knowledgeable about the history of the lighthouse, as well as the roles of a lighthouse keeper. We got to see the mechanics of the old lighthouse lamp, and step outside at the top of the lighthouse to get a great view! The museum is also interesting as we got to see the actual magnifying glass used for the lighthouse, and many other historical artifacts related to the history of the lighthouse. Overall, extremely satisfied for the price we paid! So do not hold back visiting the museum!
A lovely museum! The tour of the lighthouse was amazing and detailed - our guide was very informative and answered lots of questions. The actual museum is very interesting and hosts a lot of artefacts
One of the best museums I've been so far. 11PS for access to the museum and also a guided tour to the lighthouse which also provides access to views of the sea and the city! Staff was very engaging, informative and friendly. Worth every penny.
It's a great place to look around and the staff are friendly and happy to help in anyway. The museum was a surprise as I didn't realise how much used to go into keeping them working in the 1700s and through to late 1900s... Very enlightening and worth the fee... Didn't do the lighthouse itself but 2 of us did it and they were all for it..
Great staff, very helpful and friendly. Cafe was closed, so visit cut short. Amazing views out to the wild sea...
