NWT Weeting Heath is the best site in the country to watch the rare and unusual stone curlew. The species requires open, stony ground with short vegetation to breed, making the close-cropped turf of Weeting an ideal site. As well as stone curlews Weeting Heath is also home to woodlarks, green woodpeckers, lapwings and mistle thrushes. Other birds possibly seen from the hides include kestrel, little owl, sparrowhawk, common buzzard, and in summer, hobby. There is a Visitor Centre and toilets (both with wheelchair access), displays about the heathland and stone curlews. In 2023, NWT Weeting Heath will be open daily from 16th March, between 9.30-4.30pm. During August, the reserve will be open weekends only, plus weekdays on request.
It would get a 5 but if not a birder it's a 3. Shop good. Not much to do or see unless you are a birder.
Opened 16th March 2024 for the new season. This is a small NWT reserve open from April to July with a carpark and small visitor centre which has a toilet and small area you can buy drinks from a machine and a few snacks, with picnic tables inside and out . There is a good range of books that cover the wildlife that can be seen in the area and very friendly knowledgeable staff. There are 3 hides on the visitor centre side of the road where Stone curlews can be seen if you are lucky during the spring/summer season along with other woodland birds. Across the road there is a walk where you can see other wildlife.
Very small reserve but nice.
Friendly knowledgeable staff. Facilties a bit limited.
