Colliery museum with collection of machinery and hands-on exhibits, plus guided tours by ex-miners.
What a great experience we had today! The tour and specifically the tour guide were excellent. I would definitely recommend it because you would miss so much just by walking around yourself. Great for kids as well to interact and learn about the history of children the same age working in the pits. Thanks so much to the tour guide for his knowledge and information and for going out of his way to bring sweets out to the kids for finding all the cats
Fun place to explore during the summer holidays. They had a "find the cats" activity for the kids, which went down well. There's so much information and great local history. There is a nice gift shop and cafe at the end too. You can also get guided tours that we didn't go for, but I believe they are well worth it as the guides are very knowledgeable. I did notice an interactive bit behind the cafe for kids, but it wasn't open at the time, so I'm not sure how often it's available.
A fine amble for adults; some stairs but usually a lift nearby. On the day we came, several areas weren't open. The activity area for kids was disappointing as most of the demos didn't work. If everything had been operational it would have been excellent.
Brilliant day out for the whole family. Staff were very friendly & helpful. We didn't do the tour but chatted to a very informative former miner there. Would definitely do the tour next time. Exhibitions were well made, interesting, and well maintained. It was great being able to move around the whole factory. Seperate interactive area for children & a small park on site too. We were pleasantly surprised by how good this place was!
We were on our way back from holiday and decided to break up the journey with a drop-off here. We pre booked for the 2pm tour so we wouldn't be disappointed if there were no places when we got there. We got there about 1.15 and went straight up to the museum part to learn about the history of mining in the area, and it was very informative. Unfortunately, we had to break off for the tour ,we hadn't left ourselves enough time . The tour was taken by a very enthusiastic and entertaining gentleman who used to be a surveyor at the mine, so he definitely knew what he was talking about. The tour lasted about an hour and a half, and as the museum closed at 4,we were unable to see the rest of it,more's the pity. Definitely worth going, and the tour is a must.
Such a brilliant museum dedicated to the engineering and social history of mining in Scotland. Absolutely go for the guided tour as our guide, Tom Young, who used to work in the mine in various roles, really added value to the experience. Even the 6 and 8 year old kids thought it was amazing which for 2.5 hours with a decent cafe and interactive area was very good value at PS13.
