Enormous glacial rock resting at a seemingly precarious angle, with a metal staircase to the top.
Nice little walk. Didn't realise just how little after paying PS5 for 2 hours parking. Think we were there and back within 30 minutes! The money goes towards the upkeep though, so can't complain as it was a nice little walk. A giant stone at a strange angle isn't really that jaw dropping in 2024, but after reading the history of this stone, I can see how it would have been a major attraction back in the day. We saw plenty of climbers which was cool to see as well. Also, there was some weird, grey stuff growing out of a lot of trees. They looked like stone, but felt like plastic! Does anybody know what they are? (See Photo!). All in all, a nice spot with Nice views, but can't see myself ever going back again!
The Bowder Stone is a short walk from the nearby National Trust car park. The stone itself is quite something, and the view from the top is worth the climb. Just to see the Bowder Stone takes c.30 mins from the car park to the stone and back again. However the woods in the area could easily be a place for children to amuse themselves for much longer. If the weather was nicer when we visited, we could have easily spent more time enjoying the area.
Great stone, with a metal ladder up it. We parked in the Bowder Stone carpark (PS8.50 all day) and visited the Stone, King's How, Grange Fell, Castle Crag and a small cave. Great varied walk (Approx 7.5 miles). Only a short walk to the stone and Cave so ideal for younger children too.
Nice place with a beautiful view. Kind of regretting paying for 2 hour parking as it's literally a 5 min walk to the Bowder Stone. You can probably spend about 10-15 mins there and get your pictures. Very interesting history about this monument. I'm Glad we got a chance to go there, it won't take up too much time out of your day if you have a lot of activities booked or other plans.
It ended up being a long drive today to end up at the Bowder Stone with lots of other views along the way. The walk to the Stone was only short but lovely and the rock is certainly impressive with the size and shape. I've never seen one like it. Was it off the cliffs or from an ice flow!? It does seem to have been gently placed where it now sits. Very interesting! A few people were bouldering, on the bolder which made for an unusual sight. The stairs to the top was an unexpected addition and you can see that thousands of people had been on top by the polished rock up there. We parked I one of the few places available by the road.
Stopped off during my walk , worth a visit
Good for kids
