Gold mines dating to Roman times with guided underground tours and hands-on gold panning.
This is a nice place rich in history. It's worth a visit, but do book a tour online before you visit as tours get booked full fast, especially during holidays. I love how they have a fun activity for people to pan for 'gold.' It's fool's gold they crushed up and put in a water feature.
Aug 2024. A fascinating glimpse of Welsh gold mining with (pre-bookable) tours above and underground. Both equally good. The unlit underground tour takes in part of the open quarry before heading up setps to the mine entrance and beyond. Hard hats and lights are provided. Sturdy footwear is a must. Really good tour guides giving talks as you go, with great knowledge and some humour. See National Trust website for current opening times and costs..... you might get lucky and pan for your entrance fee back in the gold panning area. Well worth visiting. Booking is highly recommended.
A gem of a place. Free for NT members. It's rustic but that's what makes it. Great history of the goldmine through the ages. 3 tours available, we could only get on the 30 mins level access one as everything was booked up. I was worried it would be boring for the kids, but not at all. The staff were excellent and we could even take our dogs into the site. We left dogs in car whilst in the mine. Car park is nice and shady.
A great experience for all of the family( age 7 to 51). Our guide was fun and informative. I'm really glad we visited. The volunteers are doing an amazing job.
Fantastic couple of hours. The tour was brilliant, we had a great guide, Josh, who was both informative and fun. The tour of the mine was excellent.
We booked the dark drift mine tour. Josh was very enthusiastic and enjoyed the challenge of keeping 3 young boys interested (not ours). We wore helmets and head torches, and needed both. Many low rocks overhead, and muddy puddles. The exit was fairly challenging to keep your head down, but also look where you climbed. There was an easier option but we loved doing the climbing. Both over 60's!
