Atmospheric house containing family silver, china and books from the 1950s with a woodland garden.
Fantastic historic gem of a place. Car park tickets are worth booking a day in advance during holidays. It took us 1-1h30min to go around all rooms on two floors at a leisure pace. Will definitely be back to walk sarong the gardens and soak up more history and its wonderful serene ambience.
The house is better than the grounds. All of the furnishings are authentically hers or her parents or grandparents. Inspiring. The cafe doesn't have enough tables. The food is overpriced crap. If you are a diabetic and cannot have bread or sugars, there is not one thing there that you could eat. The coffee is fine. The milk is semi which makes a latte watery.
Beautiful place, well kept house and gardens and a beautiful boathouse and garden paths leading down to the river. Very tranquil and peaceful at the river and the house has the spirit of Agatha and her family all over it which is very beautiful and has something peaceful. Really worth the ticket price and the trip! Also the drive to the house is through the beautiful Devon countryside which is really stunning
Agatha Christie's holiday home is packed full of history and objects about her family and life. It did get quite busy on a Saturday so hard to enjoy at times, but the small binder of information carried with us between rooms was informative. We spent about 40 minutes inside. Volunteers were great, and even played a couple of recordings whilst in the rooms such as Agatha Christie's own voice about how to write a novel and allowed visitors to play her Steinway piano. The house was surprisingly cluttered, though, evidently holding 12,000 collection objects from five generations - so a bit to see. The gardens are also quite nice and slightly more peaceful than inside. The cafe was small, but good outdoor seating. The shop was also small but included a collection of her books (no surprise!) Used bookstore had slightly higher prices than other National Trust sites. Parking must be prebooked, and then it's a 5-10 minute walk to the entrance. Toilets available at the entrance and nearer the house, both of which were clean.
Fantastic place to visit. Amazing grounds with views of the river Dart and lovely gardens. We really enjoyed the house visit: the kids had a spotting checklist which they enjoyed and also the games laid out in the gardens. As it says you do need to book ahead if you want to drive & park
This is one of the loveliest locations in Devon with beautiful gardens leading down to the Boathouse on the River Dart. I could have just spent the whole day sitting watching the boats sail by. The house is a great memory to Agatha Christie and her family. The Cafe and Ice Cream is also a bonus. Will definitely be visiting again. Parking can be limited if it's busy so best contact and reserve a parking space in advance.
