Lichen-clad, ancient oak woodland valleys following the River Dart Hembury and Holne contain two discrete woods on the south-eastern edge of Dartmoor National Park. Perched at the top of Hembury Woods with far reaching views over Dartmoor, the iron-age Hembury Hill Fort gives you a real sense of what it would have been like to live in a protected palisade. Holne Woods, meanwhile, offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of every day living. Deep in the heart of the woods, at the base of dramatic rock covered cliffs strewn with windblown mature trees, lies a derelict Victorian pond.
Lovely spot for a walk along the river. Nice wide easy track for kids (our 5 year old enjoyed).
Nice walk down main path but we took to the side paths as felt more woodland like. Quite steep in parts. No signs so just meander or use a map. Parking was difficult and narrow lane, not really suitable for vans. Height restriction on carpark with a few spaces in rough lay-by.
Went for a walk here today! Beautiful place! The paths wouldn't be too accessible for prams or wheelchairs and there are some step paths with steps to and from the river. No sign post for trails but you can find yourself a loop if you wish. Beautiful parts to walk along by the river which us fast flowing in places but also deep if you felt like a dip! Nice and shady most of the way round and not very busy. No dog waste bins at all and limited parking but all in all a very lovely place for a walk.
Free car park a few minutes from Buckfast. Woodland walks along river Dart and up steep hill to the fort (site rather than a building!). Great for dog walking, paddling in river and there is a wide deep area for swimming.
Lots of paths and tracks across the woods including down to the beautiful river. Not terribly well signposted, some free parking by the side of the road here and there.
We just wandered off in a direction, no obvious routes, just paths so struggled to do a loop. Very peaceful
