This 17th-century cottage in the Lake District was the home of beloved children's author Beatrix Potter. The house contains many of her personal belongings and mementos, as well as a beautiful garden that inspired many of her stories. The interior remains largely unchanged since Potter's time, with her antique furniture and personal items on display. Visitors can see her desk, where she wrote many of her famous stories, and explore the charming rooms that inspired her work. The garden, which was a source of inspiration for many of her stories, features a beautiful cottage garden, a orchard, and a wild flower meadow.
We were very much looking forward to this. It was maybe smaller than we expected, so didn't take quite as long as we expected. We ensured we pre-booked our tickets online which meant we were guaranteed getting in as it was in high season. We were greeted by friendly and very helpful National Trust guides, they were quick to answer any questions and our daughter was fascinated by the illustrations and then being shown the real part of the house from the illustrations. We loved it, walked around the house, gardens and the quirky little gift shop. In total we were there between 11\2 to 2 hours.
Beatrix Potter's Hill Top Farm is such a great place to visit. It exceeded my expectations of the gardens and the house. The house was very interesting with lots of artwork by Beatrix and other artists and unique furniture from the era of her ownership. The gardens are full of classic flowers and shrubs including many apple trees and a vegetable patch. Very relaxing to sit on one of the many benches and enjoy the surrounding countryside. Quite easy to spend 3 or 4 hours here. A fantastic Beatrix Potter shop with a good range of gifts. It is a very well organised site and all the staff are very professional, friendly and polite. An adequate amount of parking spaces for visitors. I would highly recommend.
Loved it! If you are a fan of Beatrix Potter and her storybooks, definitely put this on your must visit list. Beautiful flower and vegetable gardens along with inspiring views of the lake and surrounding countryside, make it easy to imagine Peter Rabbit and his friends scampering through the hedgerows and across the verdant meadows. Fun to explore Ms. Potter's cozy cottage. Look out the windows in each room to see the views that helped to inspire Beatrix's imagination.
We really loved our visit - the gardens are quaint & very 'English'! The house is beautifully presented so that it captures her life there and links to stories & characters. The staff were informative & friendly. The shop was well stocked & full of merchandise, and the coffee hut in the garden sold cake too... which was delicious! Lots of benches to sit on.. some visitors had picnics. We struggled to park locally & should have prebooked a space at a nearby car park! If you love Beatrix Potter, this place is highly recommended.
Brilliant place to visit, quite an odd feeling to see all those pictures from childhood stories as a real life house and garden. National Trust have looked after it well. Their pre-book your time slot if travelling by car to help ensure there is parking and help ease congestion is a good idea. With a shop, coffee shack and second hand book store, there is everything you'd expect from the National Trust
Hill Top--a place where the pages of Beatrix Potter's enchanting tales come alive! Let's step into this 17th-century farmhouse, nestled in the heart of the Lake District, and discover the magic that inspired her little books. The House: Imagine roughcast stone walls, a slate roof, and a sense of history woven into every timber. Hill Top is more than a house; it's a time capsule of Beatrix's life. As you wander through its rooms, you'll find references to the very illustrations that danced across her imagination. It's as if Beatrix herself has just stepped out for a walk, leaving behind a trail of whimsy. Garden Whispers: Outside, the garden beckons. Follow the winding paths, breathe in the scent of flowers, and listen--perhaps the plants share secrets with the wind. And if you spot a rabbit nibbling on lettuce, don't be surprised--it's probably Peter Rabbit himself! Lake District Views: Look beyond the garden gate, and there it is: Lake Windermere, stretching out like a liquid mirror. The hills stand guard, their green cloaks billowing in the breeze. Beatrix must have stood here, pen in hand, drawing inspiration from every ripple on the water. Joey's Cafe: Fancy a cuppa? Joey's Cafe awaits, offering drinks and snacks. Sip your latte while gazing at the lake--it's like sipping history itself. Important Note: If you're arriving by car, remember to pre-book your ticket. The car park is small, and camper vans or motorhomes can't join the party. But fear not--there are off-road paths for those who prefer two legs or two wheels! Now, let's plan our visit: By Foot: Follow the off-road path from the Windermere car ferry (2 miles) or the route from Hawkshead (2 miles). Nature will be your guide. By Bus: Catch the 525 Mountain Goat Bus Service between the Windermere Ferry and Hawkshead, calling at Beatrix Potter's Hill Top. A mere PS2 per fare, and you're guaranteed entry. No need to book if you're bus-bound! And remember, even if you can't physically visit, our imaginations can explore boundless realms. So, raise your virtual quill to Hill Top--a place where ink meets inspiration! 123 By the way, have you ever daydreamed about living in a cozy farmhouse or penning your own tales amidst blooming gardens? Let's weave our own stories!
