This 18th-century mansion is set in 264 acres of beautiful parkland, featuring a stunning Gothic Revival style architecture with intricate stone carvings and ornate furnishings. The house boasts an impressive art collection, including works by Gainsborough, Zoffany, and Reynolds. The property also features a tranquil woodland walk, a scenic lake, and a charming rhododendron garden.
Interesting house with stunning views to the South Downs and - if sunny - a sparkling Channel. Memories and echoes of the Vaughan Williams and Wedgewood families, coming at them from an unusual angle and not in the "normal" NT manner. Beautiful grounds, trees and walks. Well worth an interesting visit.
Unusual National Trust house with a storied history. Unlike many National Trust houses, this one isn't preserved inside as if it were still lived in, but instead houses a number of exhibits covering the life and work of past inhabitants. These include the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, pottery tycoon Josiah Wedgwood, and naturalist Charles Darwin. Underneath the house are cellars with striking wall art, and at the back of the property, a pleasant lawn with good views and picnic tables. An on-site cafe serves light lunches and cakes. There are toilets in the house, and the nearest parking is at Rhododendron Wood about 5-10 minutes away. Grounds and house are dog friendly. While you're visiting, it's well worth the walk to the top of Leith Hill, which offers some of the finest views in south east England and looks down over the house.
Lovely place to visit. There is a piano and ukuleles for the children to play. There is a NT book shop upstairs. The cellar is fascinating too.
Beautiful house with great history and amazing views - shame it'll be closed until 2024 now for renovations, but the views will still be great!
Marvelous
