National Trust, working steam-powered beam engine in original mining site on the edge of the cliffs.
UNESCO world heritage site. National trust, you must book in advance for the tour, we booked the day before with no problems, you can visit the rest of the site without booking, but we do recommend doing the tour though, as you will find out more. Free for National Trust members otherwise there's a fee.
You have to pre-book a tour here via the NT website. The tour started promptly once all visitors booked on to our tour had arrived. I think there was 11 of us for this tour which was a good size of group. We were shown around the site and given the history by 3 different tour guides who took over at certain parts. They were all extremely knowledgeable.
This tour was one of the best we've done in Cornwall! The guides are incredibly passionate about the history. You get completely immersed in another world, hearing all about the miners, their families, the intense hard work over the years, the equipment, and the materials they extracted. It was absolutely fascinating and totally worth it! also the views are breathtaking!
Must be booked in advance from the National Trust website or App. The oldest beam engine still working in its original location. The history of this particular mine is quite remarkable. Running a mile out under the sea and being the location of one of the worst tin mining accidents. A fascinating place to visit.
Brilliant guides, great knowledge. Worth booking a tour and really getting to know Cornwalls Tin mine history. Worth travelling to.
The excellent 75-90 minute tour is available through prebooking only (with 12 people per timed slot). The guides provided excellent information about the extensive mines over the year, including the people, vast tunnel lengths, equipment and methods used, materials extracted (tin, cooper, arsenic), and it's eventual closure. Unfortunately the beam engine boiler was broken when we visited so we could not see it in operation, but still were able to see the engine itself, lift shafts, and more. They indicate to park at Geevor Mine 1/4 mile away (about s 12-15 minute walk at a decent moderate pace so do leave time to walk), though we noticed a few others did park at the Levant Mine car park 1 minute from the tour. Toilets are available both in the Geevor Mine car park and on-site at the Levant Mine.
