This 19th-century estate has formal gardens & nature trails, plus a tea room, gift shop & bookstore.
Everything is on an impressively big scale at Mount Stewart and so beautiful and serene. We've spent such a wonderful afternoon visiting the house and the beautiful gardens and we were so lucky because the chapel inside the house was also open, which as we understood, happens very rarely. We will most definitely go there again.
Mount Stewart, a National Trust property near Newtownards, offers a delightful escape into stunning gardens, a grand house, and a rich history. Here's a breakdown of my experience: Gardens: The true star of Mount Stewart is its sprawling gardens. From meticulously maintained formal gardens with colorful blooms to wilder woodland walks, there's something for everyone. Highlights include the Italian Garden, adorned with statues and bursting with vibrant flowers, and the lough-side walk offering panoramic views of Strangford Lough. House: The neo-classical house is a treasure trove of history. Guided tours allow you to peek into the lives of the Stewart family and admire the grand architecture and impressive art collection. While some find the on-site cafe a bit pricey with smaller portions, it's a convenient option for a post-exploration refreshment. Overall: Mount Stewart is a perfect day trip for families, couples, or solo adventurers. With dog-friendly walks, a children's natural play area, and a second-hand bookstore, it caters to a variety of interests. Pros: Stunning gardens, beautiful house with a fascinating history, dog-friendly walks, family-friendly activities. Cons: Cafe can be a bit pricey with smaller portions, no picnic tables on-site.
An interesting house on the shore of Strangford Lough, ancestral pile of Castlereagh if you're into c19 history. Lovely garden, usual excellent NT tearoom but we couldn't find any red squirrels!
We spent a half day here which was worthwhile. The house was big and had lots of history in it. Nice walks, views and gardens. You can have your lunch as there are many benches. Plenty of public toilets available. It's advisable to bring your own lunch and drinks as the cafes were always so busy.
Very pleasant walks through formal gardens, lakeside, woodland areas and walled gardens. Long and short walks with wildlife hides, places to sit and watch. Very well kept and often activities for kids to do as they journey around the lake. House worth a visit if you interest in the history. Icecream and cafe available and a small shop/bookshop.
It was a really great estate and garden to roam around, and the summer of play theme was fun for little older kids too. Also try some photography of the place! It's a must visit here in Northern Ireland!
