The 1920s period home of a grocer's family, with furniture and household objects spanning 100 years.
Such a delightful place to visit. The story of this 'stuck in time' house is fascinating and the vast amount of items is incredible. The volunteers were so nice and informative. Really enjoyable and fully recommended.
Amazing group of volunteers that work at the house. They are so knowledge and have so many stories about Mr Straw, the Straw Family and the house itself from who owned it, why it has been kept as a time capsule as well as unique stories about the tenants and encounters with those that remember the history. The house itself is packed full of history. It is dark inside to keep everything safe and secure from the damages of time. The items are unique with some of the rooms holding loads of small items including chocolate boxes and bottles. The listening pod has a few stories about the grocery shop owned by Straw and his personality about a funny story about the shop cat. The garden is stunning. The cactus green house still prominent. The gift shop had a few items including stationary, cacti, blind dates with a book and rare books.
Very friendly staff & volunteers greeted us, the lady stationed in the historic house was very knowledgeable about the previous occupants. It like stepping in to a time warp, very interesting glimpse into the past. Worth a visit, you have to pre-book a time slot.
An amazing place!! A time capsule which takes you back to the early 20th century and before. A fascinating look at how people lived back then and the things they owned and loved. I loved every minute!
A 4-5 minute introduction will be given by one of their staffs, before you enter the house where you are free to follow the one-way path and browse the interior of the house. The house is spilt into two halves. One half is the actual house the Straw family has lived in, and all the old items that have been preserved. The other half now is the reception area (with books and souvenir/gift items), a small cafe area, and gallery.
Called in last year, it's certainly not your standard NT property. Whilst interesting to walk around a home stuck in a time capsule on a personal basis I can't say I particularly enjoyed it. It did however bring back memories of visiting my grandparents.
